Our open-pit mine and concentrator in Voisey's Bay - Vale's only fly-in/fly-out operation in Canada - produces nickel-cobalt-copper concentrate and copper concentrate. An underground expansion will see a transition to a leading edge underground mine extending the life of the mine until 2034. Our state-of the-art facility in Long Harbour is the first nickel processing plant in the world to use hydrometallurgy technology to produce Plating RoundsTM from hard rock (sulphide) concentrate, with low carbon footprint compared to traditional smelter technology. Our offices in St. John's and Goose Bay provide support to the Newfoundland and Labrador Operations.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Reliability Engineer to join our Reliability Department in Long Harbour, NL . This is a 12-14 month fixed-term position.

The Mechanical Reliability Engineer is responsible for mechanical reliability engineering issues associated with the design, installation, or maintenance programs for mechanical equipment. The primary goal of the Reliability Engineer is to continuously improve equipment performance and reliability through the adoption of world class engineering principles, proven reliability tools, and continual improvement of maintenance strategies on equipment. This position will closely interface with other internal groups to ensure that plant efficiency is optimized without impact to safety, the environment, or the community.

In this position, you will:

  • Utilize reliability tools such as reliability centered maintenance (RCM), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA), and A3 to develop predictive maintenance (PdM) and preventative maintenance (PM) maintenance Strategies;
  • Implement reliability programs with a focus on mechanical equipment such as pumps, agitators, ball mill, filter presses, conveyors, etc. to maximize production profit by minimizing equipment downtime through improved maintenance procedures and strategies as well as improved design and installation criteria, minimize overall cost by reduction of failures and reducing maintenance manpower requirements;
  • Support the vibration and IR inspection, analysis and management program in the facility and be responsible for the program success through procedures, tools, and resources used and support the Condition Monitoring Specialist and maintenance trades involved in its execution;
  • Support the lubrication analysis program in the facility and be responsible for the program success by development of all procedures, tools, and resources used and provide support to the Condition Monitoring Specialist and maintenance trades involved in its execution;
  • Perform regular audits of reliability programs to ensure that quality is maintained, ensuring that all programs are designed to safely operate without impact to employees, the business, the environment, and the community, and utilize this information to continuously improve the system. Develop KPIs to measure the performance of developed reliability programs and update these KPIs on a continuous basis;
  • Interface with Maintenance Planning personnel on a regular basis to ensure that equipment data, spares requirements, and procedures and documentation are modified as necessary as a result of additions, deletions or modifications to the plant processes or configuration;
  • Ensure that all work is completed through established Request Management of Change (RFA) policies and procedures;
  • Support operations and execution teams to conduct Continuous Improvement Projects related to operating or maintaining assets. Makes recommendations for improving the repair cycle on assets. This includes applying existing engineered solutions or Vale engineering standards;
  • Provides maintainability and operability design input to engineering and project teams to ensure components, assets and systems can be maintained (calibrated, repaired, replaced, etc.) as efficiently as possible;
  • Conduct Reliability Analysis and Improvement (Analyzing trends, KPIs – MTTR/MTBF, data analysis, bad actor failure analysis and optimization).

About You:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Engineering (Mechanical discipline preferred).
    • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation with PEGNL.
  • Maintenance Reliability Professional and/or Maintenance Management Professional certification is an asset.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years' experience in a similar role.
    • A combination of experience in an Industrial and/or operating environment and knowledge of hydrometallurgy would be an asset.
  • Competent in SAP considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of MS office products (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical, planning, organizational and time management.
  • Excellent communication (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with specialized software packages for design and reliability, vibration analysis, ultrasonic inspection, infrared thermography, bearing maintenance and failure analysis.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
